PACKAGING GUIDES

Sustainable Packaging Briefs: Specify the Material and the Intended Disposal Route

A sustainable packaging brief needs more than an environmental label. Identify the components, document the material specification and discuss how the complete pack will be handled after use in its intended market.

List every component

Include the outer pack, inserts, handles, closures, coatings and other additions. Ask for the proposed composition and sourcing documentation. The paper bag example is a visual reference; its appearance alone does not establish certified sourcing or recyclability.

Discuss the intended end of use

Consider whether parts are separated, retained for another use or sent into a local collection route. Confirm the relevance of that route to the finished construction and destination. Avoid treating all paper-based packs as having the same disposal outcome.

Align the wording with the documentation

Check environmental wording against the specified components and supporting records. If an FSC claim is required, confirm the applicable order documentation and claim with the supplier. Keep the agreed material and public wording aligned when the design changes.
